Griffith Film School is proud to announce the launch of its new Diploma of Technical Screen Production, to commence in 2026.

The program offers a direct, practice-based pathway into technical screen careers and has been developed in close collaboration with industry experts to address the critical shortage of trained, job-ready crew.

“This diploma is a game-changer for anyone looking to break into the technical side of screen production,” said Professor Chris Carter, Director of Griffith Film School.

“These are the people who keep productions running – roles such as art directors, costume designers, assistant directors and location managers, who rarely seek the spotlight, but are essential to the process.”

The 12-month full-time diploma will provide practical training in areas such as set etiquette and communication, creative and technical skills, production logistics and operations, and mental wellbeing and physiological safety.

Students will gain access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including high-end digital cinema equipment and production studios, ensuring they graduate with the skills and experience needed to find immediate employment in the local screen industry.

“The diploma has been designed not just as a qualification, but as a pathway into work and into a sector that urgently needs new talent,” said Professor Carter.

“It’s about equipping students with real-world skills and connecting them directly with industry opportunities.

“In many ways, it is about making sure screen education supports the full ecosystem, not just the headline roles.”

Jacqui Feeney, CEO of Screen Queensland, welcomed the launch of the new diploma, highlighting its role in strengthening the state’s thriving screen sector.

“Queensland has earned a global reputation for attracting world-class productions, and that success is underpinned by the calibre of our local talent,” Ms. Feeney said.

“This program represents a vital step in future-proofing our workforce by developing skilled, job-ready crew, professionals who are essential to the continued growth and sustainability of our screen industry.”

The diploma marks an important first step toward expanding Griffith Film School’s offerings to the Gold Coast. With Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus already a significant hub of teaching and research, and located close to major screen production facilities, the new program positions students to engage more directly with the region’s growing screen industry.

Building on Griffith’s strong existing presence in the community, the diploma will create opportunities for deeper industry collaboration and practical, hands-on learning experiences that support both emerging talent and those seeking to upskill or advance their careers.

Village Roadshow Studios, Gold Coast

To support the diploma, Griffith has signed agreements with Village Roadshow Studios and Invest Gold Coast, reflecting a shared commitment to building a future-ready screen workforce through sustainable training infrastructure and innovation in screen education.

“This important initiative will focus on addressing the technical skills shortages we are seeing in the industry,” said Lynne Benzie, President of Village Roadshow Studios.

“Students will have practical training across multiple platforms to ensure they are on-set ready to go directly onto productions at the completion of the diploma.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he was delighted to partner with Griffith Film School on their Diploma of Technical Screen Production at its Gold Coast campus, giving more opportunities for students to find work on productions being supported by our city.

“As Australia’s fastest growing city, more national and international productions are choosing the Gold Coast as a place to make movie magic happen,” Mayor Tate said.

“With the educational options now available, we are becoming the destination of choice for upskilling and training below the line crew.”

Applications for the 2026 intake open later this year.
