Griffith filmmakers showcase work on Virgin

Griffith Film School students are set to soar to new heights with a showcase season on Virgin Australia Airlines.

A series of short graduate films produced at Griffith Film School are being screened on Virgin flights around the region, as part of the airline’s in-flight entertainment slate.

Griffith Film School has signed on to provide 12 months of themed content for the airline, with everything from ‘Best of Fest’ and ‘Global Voices’ to genre films.

Head of Griffith Film School Professor Herman Van Eyken said it marked an unprecedented opportunity for young filmmakers to find a diverse, global audience for their work.

“This is a remarkable showcase for our student work,” he said.

“We have everything from short documentaries to stop-animation, and films that have been well-received on the film festival circuit are now attracting a whole new audience.”

Professor Van Eyken, who recently won the Griffith Internationalisation Award, said the showcase on Virgin was part of the university’s broader commitment to global industry experience for its students.

Griffith Film School has wholeheartedly embraced the university’s internationalisation agenda, from faculty-led study tours to global co-productions and partnerships with film schools across the region,” he said.

“Our work reflects the university’s long and proud history of engaging in the Asia-Pacific and provides our students with the opportunity to gain new perspectives, broaden their world view and ensure they leave their degrees armed with unique knowledge and skills.”

A Virgin spokeswoman said the airline was proud to support up and coming filmmakers and provide a platform for their work.

“Our ‘Snackable’ category currently features Best of Fest from Griffith Film School students with an ongoing collection planned across 2019.

“Short films and web series are ideal for our shorter duration flights.

“Virgin Australia is committed to offering a diverse range of in-flight content to our guests and we were recently acknowledged for this by being awarded Best Video Curation for in-flight entertainment at the 2018 Airline Passenger Experience Awards.”
