The requirement for sugars in human development is one of the lectures being held at Griffith University this week as the Institute for Glycomics welcomes Professor Pamela Stanley as part of its Glycomics Week.
As distinguished Professor of Cell Biology and the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Chair at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Professor Stanley has been chosen as the Peter Gallagher Memorial Glycomics Scholar for 2012 and is presenting this year’s Lecture Series.
The Peter Gallagher Memorial series was established in 2010 in memory of the Gold Coast and Australian Rugby League personality Peter Gallagher and aims to invite internationally renowned researchers within the glycosciences to present a public lecture to the university and local community.
Peter Gallagher was a member of the Institute’s Fundraising Taskforce for a number of years and was very enthusiastic in his support of the Institute and its research.
When Peter passed away, his family set up the Peter Gallagher Memorial Fund to assist the Institute in its endeavours to combat debilitating diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, brain disorders and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, rotavirus and avian influenza.
Professor Stanley is the Associate Director for Laboratory Research of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center and an Editor of Essentials of Glycobiology, second edition.
Other honours include the Karl Meyer Award from the Society for Glycobiology and the International Glycoconjugate Award.
Her interests focus on identifying biological roles for sugar glycans that are attached to proteins. Her laboratory has revealed key functions for particular glycans in embryonic and tissue development, cancer, spermatogenesis, and the immune system.
The public lecture “What a Little Sugar Can Do For You”, will take place tonight (Tuesday 2 October) at 5.30pm in the Glycomics Lecture Theatre, G26 Room 4.09, Gold Coast campus.
