An analysis of the complexities and make up of the relationship between Australia and the United States (US) will be unveiled in a new book to be launched in Brisbane.

The Other Special Relationship: The United States and Australia at the start of the 21st Century, takes an in-depth look at the unique relationship through the four main themes of foreign policy, strategy, economics and politics.

The book, being launched by the Griffith Asia Institute, is the result of collaborative work by researchers from Griffith University, the Australian National University (ANU) and Dickinson College (DC) and the United States Army War College (AWC), in Pennsylvania.

Editors of the book, Professor Michael Wesley from Griffith, William Tow from ANU, Jeffrey McCausland and Douglas Stuart from Dickinson College (DC) said it will appeal to people with a general interest in foreign policy and international affairs.

“There is a lot of controversy surrounding Australia’s relationship with the US following September 11 and the continued support Australia has provided in the US-lead activities in Iraq,” the editors said.

“Our new analysis gives an unbiased account of the Australian / US relationship, detailing the progression and providing context to its growth.”

The work continues on from an earlier book published last year which explored the US / UK relationship, compiled by the American researchers and colleagues from Britain.

The launch will be held on Friday, March 16 at the Templeton Room in the Tattersall’s Club between 2pm-4pm.

The Other Special Relationship: The United States and Australia at the start of the 21st Century is available from ABC Shops and bookstores for $27.95.
