The Queensland Conservatorium has unveiled its 2020 concert season, which features everything from Broadway musicals to Beethoven and the Bard.
‘A big, bold program’
Acting Queensland Conservatorium Director Professor Gemma Carey said audiences could expect a big, bold program revealing the talents of students, staff and alumni.
“We continue to showcase our home-grown talent throughout the year, staging more than 250 performances to over 40,000 patrons,” Professor Carey said.
“The 2020 season will include an orchestral program featuring iconic repertoire and international guest conductors, and a production of Wicked that stars the entire musical theatre cohort.
“Whether you love opera or jazz, orchestral works or musical theatre, there are a host of stunning performances in store for 2020.”
Orchestral and opera students showcase remarkable repertoire
The orchestral season will begin with a performance of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony, followed by a year-long showcase of remarkable repertoire that concludes with Strauss’s epic Ein Heldenleben.
Professor of Opera and Orchestral Studies Maestro Johannes Fritzsch will conduct both masterpieces, and helm the year’s mainstage opera production – Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict, inspired by Shakespeare’s great comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.
Members of the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra will also accompany a full cast from Opera Australia in a spectacular new incarnation of Wagner’s Ring Cycle at QPAC. This opportunity is part of Griffith University’s partnership deal with Opera Australia.
From Broadway to the Bard
The centrepiece of the year will be a new production of musical theatre phenomenon, Wicked. The beloved musical will feature the entire musical theatre group, accompanied by the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra.
Second-year musical theatre students will tackle another Broadway hit, Legally Blonde: The Musical.
The first graduating class of Bachelor of Acting students will make their public debut with the classic Australian play, Away, Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece, A Midsummer Night’s Dreamand a newly commissioned play from Brisbane writer Elise Greig.
A year of music-making
The Queensland Conservatorium welcomes back Clocked Out and Ensemble Q as ensembles-in-residence. These ensembles provide a showcase for the Conservatorium’s renowned lecturers, who are at the cutting edge of music-making in Australia and the world stage.
There are also a host of showcase events, industry collaborations and free concerts throughout the year from jazz, musical technology and popular music students.
