Former Queensland Australian of the Year and founder of Youth Without Borders, Yassmin Abdel-Magied, will be the keynote speaker at the 20th anniversary celebration of Griffith University’s Uni-Key and Uni-Reach programs.
Student Equity Services is inviting all Uni-Reach and Uni-Key alumni (mentors and mentees) to the anniversary event to be held at Griffith’s Logan campus from 5.30-8.30pm on Thursday, 6 October.
Griffith University Vice Chancellor, Professor Ian O’Connor, will also attend.
For the past 20 years, Uni-Reach has helped increase opportunities for students from targeted schools to attend Griffith University.
The program provides mentor support, preparation for university workshops and an on-campus experience designed to help students feel they belong in the university environment.
Meanwhile, Uni-Key is a free program designed to help eligible first year students make a smooth transition to university.
Its pre-orientation and ongoing mentoring program provides information on academic, personal and financial support.
Guest speaker Yassmin Abdel-Magied was named among Engineers Australia’s Top 100 Most Influential Engineers (2015), is a former Young Australian Muslim of the Year (2007), and was named a Young Leader in the inaugural Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards (2012).
A multi award-winning writer, commentator and youth advocate, she formed Youth Without Borders as an initiative enabling young people to collaborate and cooperate towards positive change within communities.
