Australia and Indonesia – New Era, New Opportunities
The inaugural Asian Century Futures Initiative: Australia-Indonesia Dialogue Workshop was held on the 19 November 2013 at Nathan campus.
Australian and Indonesian experts were drawn from Griffith University, the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), the University of Indonesia and Gadjah Mada University. Topics of discussion included the role of leadership in shaping the bilateral relationship, human rights and democratrisation, and the future of APEC in the 21st Century.
The dialogue was opened with welcome remarks from the Chairman of LIPI, Professor Dr Lukman Hakim, Griffith Vice Chancellor and President Professor Ian O’Connor, and Mr John McCarthy AO FAIIA, Chair of the Griffith Asia Institute Advisory Council.
The Australia-Indonesia Dialogue coincided with the launch the same day of the Griffith APEC Studies Centre, to be housed within the Griffith Asia Institute. As only the second centre in Australia to be approved by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Griffith APEC Studies Centre joins the prestigious APEC Studies Consortium which includes counterpart centres in Asia, North America, and Europe.
