Queensland College of Art (QCA) graduate and sessional QCA Fine Art lecturer, Simon Degroot was recently awarded one of the top prizes at the 2015 Moreton Bay Art Awards with his artwork Cove Dupont.
Simon says the winning work represents his interest in exploring how abstract painting can interpret and reflect the environment.
“I select image details from local architecture and record these shapes in my sketchbook. The painted surface then becomes a site of interaction where these shapes combine in playful ways,” he says.
“The abstracted architectural forms represent the reshaping of my personal visual experiences.”
Simon shares his passion for visual creative expression with his students, most recently through a new QCA elective, ‘The Street’.
During the three-week intensive, QCA Fine Art students transformed 34 metres of wall in Brunswick Street into contemporary street art in conjunction with Queensland Rail’s Positive pARTnerships community art program.
Simon’s winning piece, Cove Dupont, was originally displayed at Spiro Grace Art Rooms in 2014 as part of Degroot’s exhibition Select Reshape, with the work now being added tothe extensive Moreton Bay art collection.
The Moreton Bay Region Art Awards is an annual acquisitive art prize and exhibition. With two acquisitive prizes of $7,500 and two supplementary $1,000 prizes, the Award is supported by the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
