Current misconceptions about the levels of crime in the Logan area will be confronted head-on in a forum to be hosted by leading criminology experts this week.

Griffith University will host the first ‘Crime Prevention in Logan; strategies for small business’ forum on Wednesday, August 28 at the Logan campus, which is co-sponsored the Logan Community Bank.

The forum will provide up-to-date analysis of recent crime statistics by Head of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Associate Professor Janet Ransley, Senior Lecturer, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Dr Hennessey Hayes, Senior Sergeant Mike Pearson of the Logan Police and Mr Mark Lally, Regional Manager of the Bendigo Bank.

“We will be looking at what the current trends are for the Logan area and addressing any community concerns misconceptions that may exist,” said Associate Professor Janet Ransley.

“People will no doubt be interested to know that there has in fact been a decrease in crime in Logan over the last ten years.”

“However, using the current data that we have we can look for existing or potential criminal clusters in order to understand the issues that may exacerbate the drivers of criminal behaviour,” Associate Professor Ransley said.

“We expect to see a varied mix of community and business leaders from the Logan area at the forum, who can take this opportunity to discuss the challenges to small business and develop a better understanding of what they can contribute to crime prevention in the area.”

As co-sponsor for the ‘Crime Prevention in Logan’ forum, Mr Jason Luckhardt, Chairman Logan Community Bank was adamant that it would benefit small businesses in the local community by providing expert knowledge and awareness of the real issues.

“Local businesses are doing it tough and that’s why Logan Community Bank is pleased to support this free information forum,” said Mr Luckhardt.

“Crime prevention is a relevant topic for small business and the Crime Prevention in Logan Forum gives business owners and employees the opportunity to come together to get some free advice from experts in their field.” He said.

“Logan Community Bank is pleased to partner with Griffith University to offer this opportunity to small business and community leaders in Logan.”

“I encourage all small businesses and community leaders to come along, hear about the true cost of crime in our community and learn some new strategies to prevent crime in Logan.”

Organised and hosted by Friends of the Library Griffith University, the ‘Crime Prevention in Logan’ forum is free to attend, but registration is required and places are limited.
