Elite athletes will get a chance to learn from the best about maximising their opportunities in future employment at Griffith Sports College’s Graduate Ready Program Live Webinar on Tuesday 15 September.

Naomi McCarthy OAM, Manager at Griffith Sports College, said the ‘Networking for Elite Athletes’webinar was being developed in conjunction with the University’s Careers and Employment division and would provide expert advice on how to best grow networks and maintain crucial contacts while maximising potential career opportunities.

“All Griffith Sports College student athletes are able to participate in and benefit from the Graduate Ready Program,” McCarthy said.

“It’s another part of the support we offer student athletes as they transition to being graduates, in the same way we currently support them to plan for their transition after high performance sport.”

The webinar will also feature the real life experiences of Olympic gold medalists Duncan Free OAM and Mark Knowles OAM, both of whom have carved out exceptional careers in their chosen field since retiring from their sport, rowing and hockey respectively.

“This is really Mark’s space and what he’s currently doing at the Queensland Academy of Sport is focusing on leadership and networking,” McCarthy said.

“It’s something he did a lot of during his hockey career so he’ll bring a wealth of real life experience to the event and can impart knowledge to those athletes for whom positioning yourself for life after sport doesn’t come naturally.”

The Graduate Ready program also assists athletes who want to move into postgraduate study as well as finding valuable internship and employment opportunities.
