Emma McKeon (swimming): women’s 4x100m medley relay final (subject to qualification) – 11.49am.

The Griffith University community is bracing for some long nights and early mornings tracking the fortunes of students and alumni at the 2016 Olympics in Rio over the next few weeks.

A total of 27 current and past Griffith students will be competing in more than 50 events at the Olympic and Paralympics, including three in the women’s soccer team and three in women’s water polo.

Among the team are strong medal hopefuls swimmers Cameron McEvoy and Emma McKeon, who between them are entered in 10 individual and relay events, while fellow Griffith student Adam Imer is representing Brazil in hockey.

While some of the team sports are timed well for Australian audiences, including women’s soccer and rugby sevens, die-hard swimming fans seeking action in the heats could expect to put in some all-night sessions.

Griffith students and alumni potentially feature in almost every day of competition, including the early stage-match competition for women’s soccer on Thursday (August 4), a day before the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony. Below the heats are listed, with finals appearances subject to qualification.

The action isn’t confined to the Olympics, with four Griffith students also taking part in the Paralympics starting in September.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games are being held from August 5-21 while the Paralympics take place from September 7-18.

For those who dare, here is the full competition schedule featuring Griffith students and alumni competing at both the Olympics and Paralympics (although times quoted may be subject to change without notice).
