A Health and Knowledge Precinct in the Logan suburb of Meadowbrook.
This is the vision being put forward to Meadowbrook residents by Griffith University, Logan Hospital and TAFE Queensland (Loganlea campus) as they are asked to consider how their suburb can be transformed into an integrated centre for health, education and community.
City of Logan Mayor, Luke Smith said the proposal being put before residents could transform the precinct into a healthy connected community which would become a regional hub for research, education, transport — and a fantastic place to live.
“We’re taking the lead from cities like Boston which seamlessly integrate universities, colleges, research facilities and open space into a people and cycle-friendly environment,” he said.
A connected urban village
“Our vision is to create a connected urban village, a community where people can walk to a gym, and then stop for a coffee as they continue their walk to work, TAFE or University.
“It’s about improving the economic and place-making opportunities for our centres by building on our existing strengths — in this case hospital, medical and research and education facilities in an extended campus-like setting.
“We’re now at the stage of inviting stakeholders and the broader community to contribute to a draft master plan to guide the area’s development, which will inform a new local plan for Meadowbrook for incorporation into the Logan Planning Scheme,” he says.
The master plan is the latest in a series prepared by council — to guide development in our regionally significant activity centres — with the others being Logan Central, Springwood and Beenleigh.
Collectively these centres will complement each other and will become key city destinations both for local residents, businesses and visitors.
“Griffith University is excited to be part of Logan City’s newMeadowbrook Master Plan. The plan has been developed in collaboration with the key partners over many months and offers all stakeholders a focal point for planning for an innovative health and knowledge precinct,”saysProfessor Lesley Chenoweth AO,Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Griffith’s Logan Campus.
“Griffith’s Logan campus already has a strong focus on degree programs and research in the health and disability areas. The new Meadowbrook plan will drive future activities in improving the health and wellbeing of our students and the community.
“There is a great alignment of the principles underpinning the plan and what Griffith Logan campus is trying to deliver.”
Chair of the Planning and Development Committee Cr Russell Lutton said the Draft Meadowbrook Master Plan had been prepared to create a healthy and social community and realise the full potential of the key activity generators located in the centre.
“The plan provides a vision for connecting the community at all levels through education, health, transport, built environment; and community,” he said.
