Translating the science and technology of golf to improve performance on the course will be the focus of this week’s World Scientific Congress of Golf (WSCG), hosted by Griffith University.
Held for the first time in Australia and open to anyone with an interest in golf, the 2014 WSCG runs from 5-7 September on the Gold Coast and will feature a host of top golf researchers and speakers, including coffee business entrepreneur Adjunct Professor Phillip Di Bella.
A Griffith Business graduate and avid golfer, Professor Di Bella will discuss “emotional intelligence” and the importance of having a vision and a passion which can be applied to success in business and sport. ‘Developing a physical preparation program for optimising performance in elite golfers’ will be the discussion focus of Mr David Darbyshire, physical preparation coach for multiple PGA Tour winner and 2013 US Masters champion, Gold Coaster Adam Scott.
Griffith has a strong connection with Scott through the Adam Scott Foundation Sports Business Scholarship. Meanwhile Dr Shaun O’Leary, specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist from the University of Queensland, will address the importance of individualising exercise programs for golfers, and Professor Sandy Gordon from the University of Western Australia will discuss ‘Positive Psychology And Golf – The Case of Self- Compassion’.
Other speakers include Professor Mark Broadie from Columbia Business School and Dr Debbie Crews, a sport psychology consultant from Arizona State University.
Held at the QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise as well as the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club, the WSCG will offer a host of social and networking opportunities including the Internationals v Home Golf Tournament in which renowned Canadian golf coach Henry Brunton and former British Women’s Open Winner Karen Lunn will be on hand to strengthen the sides.
In addition, WSCG attendees can also take part in the National Golf Coaching Summit, which this year is open to PGA and non-PGA members.
