Griffith University has acknowledged recipients of Queensland Government Supporting Women Scholarships (SWS).
Pro Vice Chancellor (Sciences) Professor Debra Henly welcomed successful Griffith students at a luncheon this week at the Gold Coast campus.
“These scholarships are a great initiative and open up opportunities for Queensland women of all ages and at all stages of their working lives,” Professor Henly said.
“Last year Griffith University had 10 recipients for these undergraduate scholarships and we were delighted to receive an additional 11 undergraduate scholarships for 2014.”
A four-year initiative launched in 2013, Supporting Women Scholarships provide financial support for women entering non-traditional and generally male-dominated areas of study and employment.
Administered by the Department of Education, Training and Employment, they help women achieve qualifications in the following fields: Agricultural and Environmental Studies; Architecture and Building; Engineering; Earth Sciences; and Information Technology.
Women who are finishing school, changing careers or looking to study and return to the workforce are eligible to apply.
Professor Henly said that in addition to the undergraduate scholarships, top-up scholarships were offered to students commencing either a PhD or Master of Philosophy in Semester 1 this year in one of the eligible fields of study. Griffith received two scholarships for PhD students.
Scholarship recipients at the Gold Coast luncheon were Lauren Berge Smith (Bachelor of Environmental Design); Jemila Darr (Bachelor of Environmental Engineering); and Melissa Heath, whose PhD is on heat transfer during charging of carbon fibre reinforced plastic.
