G20 ministers must overcome old trade barriers

One of the world’s leading G20 authorities has told Griffith University News that old barriers must be overcome to enable the unilateral liberalisation of trade.

Professor John Kirton, Director of the G8 Research Group and Co-director of the G20 Research Group at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, made his comments ahead of this weekend’s G20 trade ministers meeting in Sydney.

He welcomed the contribution of Federal Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb in the lead-up to the trade ministers meeting.

Professor Kirton addressed a range of G20-related subjects including economic growth, technology, and Australia’s role as 2014 host of the G20 Summit.

He also considered the evolution of the G20 and the role of the university in relation to the G20.

Professor Kirton made his comments at the Corruption, Integrity Systems and the G20 Conference hosted by Griffith University with Transparency International.
