An initiative of the Griffith Asia Institute is allowing undergraduate students to become active participants in global exchange initiatives that seek to optimise mutual appreciation for one of Australia’s biggest trade partners.
The Asia Future Fellows Program sees 10 Griffith University and 10 Peking University students come together during two, intensive one-week programs held in Brisbane this week and Beijing in November.
Incorporating a range of activities including cultural business seminars, workshops, plus government and industry briefings, the Chinese students have already enjoyed a weekend of Australian leisure activities.
Upon their arrival Saturday the 10 Chinese students visited the Lone Pine Sanctuary before enjoying a day tour of the Gold Coast.
“Monday marked the official start of the five-day formal program that will include academic introductions on campus that will set the framework for industry liaisons and cultural exchanges throughout the week,” said Acting Director, Griffith Asia Institute, Professor Leong Liew.
“Highlights will include meetings with the relative authorities responsible for Australia-China relations, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Brisbane City Council discussing the importance of sister city relationships that exist, plus a visit to Parliament House.
“The entire student contingent from Griffith and Peking Universities represent a future leadership cohort, which boasts major interests in Australia-China relations, so it’s great to provide a context whereby personal and professional relationships can be fostered.
“Undoubtedly students will benefit from the exchange that is part of the Asian Century Futures Initiative.”
The timing of the Australian leg of the Asia Future Fellows Program is perfect as Brisbane ramps up preparations towards the G20 Leadership Summit.
All students will be provided valuable insights into the operational and promotional mechanics of the International forum which will be delivered by Brisbane Marketing later this week.
At the completion of global exchange activities, elements of the Beijing visit in November will be confirmed and group projects assigned that will then be presented as part of the Asian itinerary.
