A Social Marketing @ Griffith initiative continues to have a positive impact on Queensland teenagers with a Mackay school the latest to embrace the program.

More than 200 Year 10 Mercy College students in Mackay took part in the Game On: Know Alcohol program (GO:KA) on Thursday 26, June 2014.

The purpose of the program is to educate teenagers about alcohol, standard drink size and strategies for preventing and minimising alcohol consumption.

The students participated in a range of activities, interactive workshops and played several online games that were specifically designed for the GOKA program.

“The use of online games in GO:KA is key to creating an interactive and fun experience, while still getting the message across about the consequences of binge drinking,“ Research Fellow Dr Lisa Schuster says.

“Students’ knowledge levels increase significantly. For example, they learn about the effects of alcohol and how these effects are linked to the number of standard drinks consumed.”

To date the program has been delivered at seven high schools in Queensland; St, Mary’s College (Maryborough),, St Edmund’s College (Woodend ), St Peter Claver College (Riverview), St. Mary’s College (Kingaroy), Unity College (Caloundra West), Marymount College (Burleigh Waters) and Mercy College (South Mackay).
