Griffith University Gold Coast graduate, David Robertson, is used to a job that is pretty much out of this world.
His work at the Science Museum in London, as a contemporary science developer, has involved penguins, zombies and particle accelerators.
But now he’s after a really exotic position… as Queensland Park Ranger in theBest Jobs in the World competition being run by Tourism Australia.
David graduated with a Science degree from Griffith’s Gold Coast campus (majoring in Wildlife Management and Environmental Science) in 2006 before going on to complete an Honours year.
He says his studies at Griffith provided the springboard for his career, and now he is really excited by the prospect of returning home to Queensland if he is selected for the Best Job of Queensland Park Ranger.
David was inspired to give it a go after seeing the six different roles on offer, even though he knew the competition would be fierce.
“Making a 30 second video which showcases yourself and makes you stand out from thousands of others is very tough,” David said.
“I wanted to make it clear that I’m well qualified for the job, but there was probably quite a bit of luck involved as there were lots of brilliant applications!”

Despite the obvious fun, David thinks this competition provides the opportunity to deliver a serious message.
“I think this competition is really important for bringing attention to the environment,” David said.
“A personal connection to nature, whether that’s from visiting remote places or watching great documentaries, reminds us about the amazing world we live in.
“The animals, plants and landscapes that make up our backyard in Australia are genuinely unique and the more people who can see and experience that, the better.”
David is also a strong advocate for studying science.
“Learning the practical skills needed to be an environmental scientist was a lot of fun; the field work in particular always felt like an adventure,” David said.
“My degree also opened my eyes up to big issues that affect everyone on the planet. That inspired my move into communicating science, and ultimately led me to apply to be Queensland’s Park Ranger.
“I’m asking for people who care about the environment to be my ‘ultimate referees’ and help me make it to the final of the Best Jobs competition. All they need to do is tweet or email to me ([email protected]) a picture of themselves with a sign supporting ‘Ranger Dave’.”
“A Park Ranger has a responsibility to everyone, and so I think everyone should have a say in who earns the role.”
Finalists for the Best Jobs in the World will be announced on 15th May.
