Reducing child abuse and neglect

Professor Clare Tilbury, Dr Hennessey Hayes and Professor Paul Mazerolle have been awarded more than $130, 000 in anAustralian Research Council linkage grant.

Their project examines the factors associated with once-only and repeated notifications of child abuse and neglect.

Dr Hayes said early intervention services for vulnerable children were an important area to target in ensuring that services match child and family needs.

“Factors associated with recurrence include child vulnerability, social support deficits, family stress and domestic violence. When adequate services are provided that match the needs of families at risk, recurrence is less likely,” he said.
