Griffith University’s Aquatic and Fitness Centre is opening its doors to local families for a weekend of free fun and activities, March 17 & 18.
The centre’s free open days are an opportunity for members and the wider Mt Gravatt community to have an enjoyable, active day out together.
There will be plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained all day, with highlights including swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, face painting, a sausage sizzle, games and more. A number of great membership offers and prizes will also be up for grabs.
Mr Chris Beattie, Manager of Griffith’s Aquatic and Fitness Centre, said the Open Days were a great way to celebrate the recent opening of the $5-million centre with the family.
“We encourage everyone in the area to come down and get involved in all the fantastic activities we have planned,” Mr Beattie said
The centre includes a 25 metre heated eight-lane outdoor pool, a purpose-built heated indoor learn-to-swim pool, a kids splash pool with slide and mushroom water fountains, café and a refurbished fitness centre.
Mr Beattie said the Centre provides opportunities to engage both the campus community and general public in swimming and pool-related activities.
“We have expanded our Swim School to include squad training for both juniors and seniors,” he said.
“Best of all we are working with the international campus community to run special swimming classes for international students, which is a great way to immerse them in Aussie culture.”
“Education schools will once again have the opportunity to conduct specialist classes in the facility all year round,” he said.
“The Aquatic and Fitness Centre complements the existing sporting facilities and programs on the Mt Gravatt campus — the tennis centre, elite tennis programs, sports field, recreation hall, outdoor multi-purpose courts and social sport program — making it a very unique sporting precinct.
“The facilities, either by themselves or combined, provide a great resource for not only Griffith’s students and staff, but to sporting groups, local schools and the general public.”
Mr Beattie anticipates the Aquatic Centre will generate similar community interest to that experienced by the Griffith University Tennis Centre.
“The tennis centre has more than 400 kids and adults participating in coaching programs and enjoys a very high casual hire and fixture base,” he said.
