Book celebrates environmentalist’s life

The Australian Rivers Institute (ARI) will host the Brisbane launch of a new book about Australia’s waterways by Peter Cullen on Friday, June 17.

This Land Our Water, Water Challenges for the 21st Century, A Collection of Papers is a celebration of the late Professor Peter Cullen AO, a respected advocate for the land and waterways of Australia, and who was integral in the establishment of Griffith’s ARI.

Professor Cullen was an influential communicator in many debates on the sustainable use of water in Australia.

In 2001 Professor Cullen was honoured with the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Award for his National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality. He was also a founding member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, formed in November 2002.

The 23 papers included in the book were originally written for journals, books and conferences. The collection resounds with the clarity of his purpose — to communicate scientific knowledge and influence the way Australians consider water use.

The event will be launched by ARI’s Professor Angela Arthington.

WHEN: 5pm, Friday, June 17.

WHERE: Griffith University, S05, Room 2.04, Queensland College of Art Lecture Theatre,South Bank campus.
