Griffith University has received 11 commendations in its latest report from the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), in particular being praised for the Griffith 2015 strategy, its engagement with the broader community in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and development of the Gold Coast campus.
Griffith University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Ian O’Connor welcomed the AUQA report that has acknowledged the hard work and significant achievements of the University. In all, there were 11 commendations, 11 affirmations and 8 recommendations.
The AUQA panel focussed particularly on two themes: Supporting Student Success and International Activities in the Cycle 2 report. It also commented on progress since the Cycle 1 Report completed in 2003.
“Clearly we are on the right track with the commendations. The panel was impressed with the evidence of our staff engagement with and understanding of the University’s strategic intent,” Professor O’Connor said.
“We are pleased to have been commended for improving our quality systems, and our explicitly benchmarked approach to planning and quality assurance.
“The affirmations and recommendations are consistent with our strategic objectives and we are happy to take them on board. In every case, we have already identified the need and are working towards improvement.”
Griffith was also commended for:
– early identification of students at risk and methods for improving undergraduate retention
– maintaining the successful Uni-Reach program
– its Disability Support Services
– the Succeeding@Griffith program for first year undergraduate students
– the adoption of an evidence-based approach to academic integrity underpinned by research literature and practice; and
– the work of the School of Nursing and Midwifery for their transnational education programs in Singapore and Japan.
Professor O’Connor observed that an external review such as AUQA provided the University with a valuable reality check.
“It causes us to examine closely what is important to the University and how we deliver in those important areas. Such critical examination can only be to the University’s and our students’ ultimate benefit.”
